Paneer Bhurji /Indian Paneer Recipe


This is a very popular cottage cheese or paneer dish a favourite of most vegetarians.Paneer bhurji is commonly found in the menus of most North Indian restaurants.Flavoured with common Indian spices this dish can be served with hot paranthas,chapati,naan,kulcha,pav or sliced bread at any time of the day but it is usually served in breakfast.

Paneer bhurji makes for an excellent side dish with the main meals besides you can also use it as a sandwich filling or as a stuffing for making paneer stuffed vegetables.

Follow this easy step by step recipe and try out this delicious dish at home.

  • 200 gms paneer or cottage cheese.
  • 2 medium size onions sliced thinly.
  • 2 medium tomatoes chopped fine.
  • ½ inch ginger chopped fine.
  • 1 green chilli chopped fine.
  • ¼ tsp cumin seeds.
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil.
  • ¼ tsp turmeric powder.
  • 1 tsp coriander seed powder.
  • ¼ tsp cumin seed powder.
  • ¼ tsp red chilli powder.
  • 1 pinch garam masala(store bought).
  • ¾ tsp salt or to taste.
  • 2 tbsp chopped coriander leaves for garnish.

  • Crumble paneer with your hands into small pieces and keep aside.
  • Heat oil in a pan on medium heat to smoking point.
  • Lower the heat and splutter cumin seeds,when they start changing colour add the sliced onions and fry them till they are golden brown in colour.
  • Now add the dry spices coriander powder,cumin powder and red chilli powder, stir around for few seconds.
  • Now add the chopped tomatoes,chopped green chilli,chopped ginger and salt to taste mix well.
  • Cover with a lid and cook on low heat till the tomatoes become tender and mushy.
  • Now add the crumbled paneer to this masala, mix well and cook for 2 to 3 mins on medium heat so that the masalas get well blended with the paneer.
  • Take care not to cook for too long as paneer if cooked too much loses its soft texture.
  • Sprinkle garam masala and chopped coriander leaves as a garnish on top.
  • Serve hot with any Indian bread of your choice.
